The words snail mail refers to using the US Postal Service to send a message by mailing a letter...and was created shortly after the invention of e-mail. Sending a letter via the US Postal Service is referred to as snail mail because by using the postal service it can take days to deliver a letter whereas an e-mail is delivered in seconds. Hence mail delivered via the US Postal Service moves at a "snail's pace" compared to an e-mail that is delivered in seconds.  Hence the words snail mail.
